The effect of LED photobiomodulation on implant stability

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of LED PBM on implant osseointegration by measuring implant stability changes by RFA and measuring IL-1ß, TGF-ß, PGE2 and NO levels in PICF.Fifteen patients (8 control, 7 test) were participated in the study. Full-mouth clinical indices (PI, GI, PD, BOP) were recorded preoperatively. In test group, LED device (OsseopulseTM, Canada) at a wavelength of 605-631 nm in NIR region with an energy density of 20 mW/cm2? was applied to surgical area during three weeks, three times in a week, starting from the operation day. Application was repeated nine times. ISQ values were recorded at the time of operation, 2., 4., 8. and 12.weeks postoperatively. PICF samples were collected in postoperative 4 and 12 weeks and IL-1ß, TGF-ß, PGE2 and NO levels were evaluated. Clinical indices were recorded around implants in postoperative 4 and 12 weeks.No significant differences were found in clinical indices between both groups. In control group, significant reduction of ISQ values from week 2 were demonstrated (p>0,05). In test group, ISQ values recorded in the baseline were maintained during the study and no significant changes were observed (p>0,05). Changes in biochemical parameters were found similar between groups over time (p>0,05). However, in the study group a negative correlation was found between PGE2 and ISQ values (r=-0,709, p=0,022).As result of this study, it was demonstrated that LED application to surgical area has a positive effect on osseointegration process and implant stability is maintained by LED
