EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECTS OF LAPPING PARAMETERS ON SURFACE ROUGHNESS (M.Sc. Thesis) Hikmet ÇALIMLI GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY JULY 2003 ABSTRACT In this work, the effects of pressure, time and workpiece hardness on lapping process have been invastigated in order to obtain better surface roughness which is required in many applications. GG6 cast steel, DIN 4028 stainless steel and Ç8620 sementation steel were chosen as test specimens. Ç8620 sementation steel were used in two groups. The first group, GG6 cast steel and DIN 4028 stainless steel were hardened in water. Any heat treatment was not applied to the second group of Ç8620 sementation steel. The specimens having different hardness values were lapped on a surface lapping machine tool according to pressure and time. The specimens were compared in accordance with pressure, time and hardness which are important parameters in lapping processes. It was determined that the surface roughness improved considerably after lapping harder materials.
