The reflections of postmodernism in the novels Kalan and Tuhaf Bir Erkek by Leyla Erbil

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the reflections of postmodernism in Kalan (The Rest 2010) and Tuhaf Bir Erkek (A Strange Man 2013) by Leyla Erbil who rejected the "masculine language" and introduced the use of feminine language into Turkish literature. In this study, the concept, emergence, and definition of postmodernism, and a brief analysis of process from modernism to postmodernism were examined in terms of Turkish and Western intellectuals' ideas. There is no any agreement on the description and principles of postmodernism. Nonetheless, we have tried to do our analysis in the light of themes and images showing postmodern characteristics which are defined by the prominent authorities. The efforts to make additions and extensions to the postmodernism, which have emerged with the failing ideologies of modernism, have been going on. Although it is possible to see some characteristics of postmodern literature in modernism, distinct from modernism, postmodernism, as a more modern concept, was built upon irregularities in its nature. When compared with post-modern novels in Turkish Literature, Erbil in Kalan and Tuhaf Bir Erkek, defending grammar of rebellion shecreated in "feminine language" dominated by "the masculine language", stands on a different position by expanding postmodernism and blending it with post-feminism. Coming to a conclusion by considering the analysis done on the works, we argue Kalan and Tuhaf Bir Erkek mostly have postmodern characteristics.
