In recent years, port and harbour engineering has been developed and changed day by day. Hence; subjects that are assosicated with port and harbour planning and design come into prominence more and more. With this purpose, this prepared thesis deals with the relevant topics in the individual chaptersIn the first chapter of studies; in case of planning a modern port and harbour have been discussed remarkable basic principles, such as to be planned of landward and seaward areas of port and harbour, to be expressed clearly in terms special features of several terminals and to be given design criterias of port and harbour structures.Second chapter of this studies have treated of basic principles of ancillary facilities which include mooring equipments, access systems, sign and handling equipments at the harbours and portsAs port conditions have changed and developed, dead weight and loads have increased consistently. Due to increasing weights and loads, pavement design of port terminals become important more than ever. In the third chapter are given information about this topic.Performance-based design is an emerging methodology, which was born from the lesson learned from earthquakes. The goal of this design is to overcome the limitations in conventional seismic design. Thus, acceptable levels of structural damage must be clearly identified. The fourth chapter of studies informs about performance-based design of port structures.Structural analysis methods, which evaluate extent of displacement, failure modes and elastic response limit of port structures due to seismic loading, are denoted in the fifth chapter of studies.In the sixth and seventh chapters of this studies; are given some cases that are related to designs of different gravity quay walls.Finally, the last chapter of studies consists particularly of comparison of technical commentaries in the different standarts, manuals and guidelines and summaries of results of performance-based design.
