Prepairing and applications of comprehension tests for theorems and proofs in calculus courses and students views

In this study comprehension tests, which simplifies the understanding of the proofs oftheorems in undergraduate level Calculus Courses were prepared. These tests are applied tothe students and the view of students about the comprehension tests were evaluated. For thispurpose, the comprehension tests were applied to the freshman students of Gazi University,Faculty of Education, Department of Mathematics Education in Calculus courses in 2001-2002 academic year. Then another test, which asks for their views about the comprehensiontest was given. Moreover, interviews were made with 6 students.This study is based on Conradie's article titled " Comprehension Tests inMathematics". The answers of the students to open-end questions were classified by means ofphenomenographical approach and tabulated. During the interview, the vocal answers givenby three students at different times were recorded and then these were converted to writtenformat. At the end of the survey, their views about the proof and comprehension tests wereevaluated and some suggestions were given to the researchers and educators who intend tostudy on these subjects.
