Investigation of the effects of mother-father-adolescent relationships on self-esteem and behavior problems in high school students in the context of school social work

Human-beings are constantly in development and change from the moment they are born. They continue their life by going through various periods. Undoubtedly, every period in human life has a special importance. However, the period in which signs of change and development are seen in all areas is the adolescence period. This period is a period in which every individual lives regardless of the person and the society. For the individual, surviving this period positively is very important for the rest of his life. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of parent relationships, self-esteem and behavioral problems of students who are in adolescence and receive education in different high school types, and the importance of the school social service model in solving adolescence problems. The universe of the research consists of students studying in high schools affiliated to the Kocaeli National Education Directorate, and the sample consists of 560 students selected from this universe. For the purpose of the research, quantitative research method was used. Accordingly, quantitative data was obtained from students using the personal information form, the Mother-Father-Adolescent Relations Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Behavior Problems Scale. In the analysis of quantitative data, frequency tables, t tests, one-way analysis of variance (Anova), Scheffe test, Tukey test and correlation analysis were used. Results were systematized with the statistics program. As a result of the interpretation of the data, the maternal relationships of the students are better than the father's relationships, the self-esteem and the frequency of showing behavioral problems differ significantly with respect to gender and parental attitudes, whereas the levels of parent-father education and economic status do not differ significantly with parental relationships, self-esteem and behavioral problems. It has been identified. It was found that the type of school educated does not differ according to self-esteem and vice versa, it shows a significant difference with behavioral problems. A negative correlation was determined between parental relationships and self-esteem and behavioral problems. A positive correlation was observed between self-esteem and behavioral problems, and it was concluded that the students who often showed behavioral problems were students with low self-esteem. After the results obtained, it is thought that it is important to implement school social service practices and to disseminate them from school environments in order to improve the well-being of students and to improve them academically and socially.
