Abstract (TR)
Aim: This study aimed to determine the levels of problematic internet use, digital gaming addiction, and digital obesity among high school students, as well as to examine the relationships between these variables. Method: Designed as a descriptive and correlational study, the research was conducted between June 2024 and June 2025 in four public high schools located in the Yakutiye district of Erzurum, Türkiye. A total of 490 students, selected through a multistage sampling method, were included in the study. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Problematic Internet Use Scale, and the Digital Gaming Addiction Scale. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analysis were employed. For the identification of digital obesity, machine learning methods were applied; variable selection was performed using the Boruta algorithm, and models were tested with a 10-fold cross-validation method. Results: The findings revealed that the mean scores of problematic internet use and digital gaming addiction were at moderate levels. Both problematic internet use and digital gaming addiction were significantly higher among male students and those whose expenses exceeded their income. A moderately strong positive correlation was determined between problematic internet use and digital gaming addiction (p < 0.05). Machine learning models generally demonstrated satisfactory performance, with the highest predictive success achieved by Random Forest and Support Vector Machine algorithms. Conclusion: The study indicates that problematic internet use, digital gaming addiction, and digital obesity represent significant public health concerns among high school students. The results highlight the necessity of developing school-, family-, and health-based programs aimed at reducing digital addictive behaviors and preventing the risk of digital obesity in adolescents.
