Highschool students' academic motivation, school attachment and basic psychological needs at school and investigation of the relations between them

In this study, the relations between highschool students' academic motivation, school attachment and basic psychological needs at school are investigated. Besides, it was aimed to examine academic motivation levels of adolescent in terms of some demographic variables. The study universe consists of adolescents attending high schools in Elazığ province in 2018-2019 academic year. The sample of the study was a total of 750 students, 389 girls and 361 boys, who were educated in different high school types selected by convenience sampling method. Data were collected by Academic Motivation Scale (Bozanoğlu, 2004b), School Attachmen Scale High School Form (Savi-Çakar and Karataş, 2017), Adolescent Students' Basic Psychological Needs at School Scale (Özen, 2016) and Personal Information Form created by the researcher. In the analysis of the data, t Test for Independent Sampling, One Way Variance Analysis and Pearson Moments Multiplication Correlation Coefficient were used. Research results showed that there is significant difference in academic motivation levels of adolescents according to class level, grade point average and absenteeism, however there is no significant difference in academic motivation levels of adolescents according to gender, school type and class size. Moreover, it is determined that there is a positively medium-level significant correlation between academic motivation and school attachment, academic motivation and basic psychological needs at school, school attachment and basic psychological needs at school.
