Abstract (EN)
The main objective of this study is to investigate whether the use of short stories in English classes is an effective material for students. In this study, a single group pre-test post- test pre-experimental research design was used, and 11th and 12th-grade students from a high school in Serik district of Antalya province were included in this study. Before the research, a questionnaire, for which permission to use was obtained from Kırkgöz (2012), was revised as a pre- and post-study questionnaire while maintaining its original form. Two open-ended questions probing students' opinions on using short stories in English classes were added at the end of pre- and post-study questionnaires before the implication of the study. Prior to commencing the study, the pre-study questionnaire was applied to EFL students. As a result of this pre-test, students' opinions on using short stories in English classes were gathered. Subsequently, the short story "The Mission" by B. Hugh Cave, published in 1959, was divided into eight parts, and a lesson plan was prepared for each part. These were implemented in English classes in eight weeks, supported by various language learning activities. Following this application, Kırkgöz's (2012) original questionnaire with the addition of two open-ended questions was administered as a post-test. The responses from the students were analyzed using the SPSS program. The results of pre-and post-tests of each item were analyzed and compared. Besides, content analysis was performed for the open-ended questions. The analysis of the research data revealed that students had prejudices against the use of short stories in English classes before the application phase, however, after the study, these prejudices were broken, and students viewed short stories as an effective language learning material. Additionally, at the end of the research, suggestions were made to shed light on future studies in this field.
