Examining the level of loneliness and social support of high school students

In this study, social support and loneliness in high school students was examined, in terms of sex, academic success, parental education, parental income, parental attitudes, and relations with friends and relations with siblings. The population of this study has students who afitend to Cumhuriyet Lisesi, Mustafa Kemal Lisesi and Gülveren Lisesi in city center of Ankara. The sample of the study, includes 375 students, was randomly selected from those schools in different areas and grades. The data was collected by using 3 scales social support levels of students which is the dependent variable of the study, was gathered by the "perceived social support scale, the data about loneliness has gathered by "UCLA loneliness scale", the data about other independent variables has gathered by "personal information form" which was developed by the researcher. The relationship between loneliness and social support was analyzed by regression analysis. Data gathered from "perceived social support scale" and personal traits of students was analyzed by independent sample t test and for the groups more than 2 was analyzed by "f test (ANOVA). In the case of "f ' test was statistically significant, for explanly where the difference come from "scheffe test" was employed. The significance level for differences between groups was 0.05. The results of the study indicated that social support levels of students did not indicate any differences by parental education and parental income. There was not linear relation between loneliness and social support levels. There is a significant difference between gender and social support levels of students; the difference was in advance of girls. There is significant difference between students' perceived academic success and social support levels. The students who perceive their academic success as medium or bad at perceived social support. There is not significant difference between students who perceive their success as medium and students who perceive their success as bad at perceived social support significant difference between parental attitudes and social support levels of students was found.IV There is not a significant difference between students whose parents have authoritarian and conservative attitudes. The students whose parents have democratic attitudes are higher than students whose parents are authoritarian at social support levels.For relations with friends and relations with siblings, there is a significant difference in social support levels. Students who are satisfied with their friendship have higher means than students who are satisfied with their friendship have higher means than students who are partially satisfied or not satisfied with their friendship at perceived social support levels. There is not significant difference between students who are partially satisfied with their friendship and who are not satisfied with their friendship at perceived social support levels. Students who are satisfied with relations with their siblings have higher means than students who are partially satisfied or not satisfied with relations with their siblings at perceived social support. There is not significant difference between students who are partially satisfied or not satisfied with relations with their siblings at perceived social support levels.
