Developmental and traumatic problems that high school students experience: From the viewpoint of the parents, teachers, and students

Abstract (EN)

This study aims to put forward developmental and traumatic problems of high school students in the light of parent, teacher and student's views. It is thougt that datas and proposals deducted from this study will contribute to families, education faculties and other teacher training programmes. In this study, mixed method research-explarotary model was used. Firstly, qualitative datas were collected and analyzed, then quantitative implementations were done. Integrated multi-state design was used for qualitative study, survey model was used for quantitative part of the study. Universe of the study is city of Malatya, sample of the study is Yesilyurt district. Sampling was done in order to represent the universe. Data was collected from 64 people consisted of students, parents and teachers with purposive sampling method in order to collect qualitative datas. 414 students, 94 teachers and 97 parents were included in the study and random sampling was used for collecting quantitative datas. In the first process, semi-structured interview forms are prepared by researcher to detect developmental and traumatic problems experienced by students. A measurement tool was developed with datas collected from the first process and then qualitative process was completed. Then researcher passed to the second process with a measurement tool that was developed for quantitative data. After qualitative analysis 'developmental problems questionnaire' consisted of 61 items and 'traumatic problems questionnaire' consisted of 17 items were developed and used for collecting quantitative data. Nvivo 10.0 package programme was used to make content analyses, SPSS 20.0 package programme was used to make descriptive analyses for calculating means, standart deviation, percentage and frequency values. In the study, developmental and traumatic problems of high school students were investigated according to point of view of teachers – students, differences and similarities between them were studied in the light of results. While according to parents – teachers and students' point of view the most experienced developmental problem/crisis is 'test anxiety and academical failure', the most experienced traumatic problem/crisis is 'death and moving /change of school'. Some proposals were made based on the results.
