ABSTRACT THE TEACHING OF THE ARMENIAN ISSUE IN ?THE REVOLUTION HISTORY OF THE TURKISH REPUBLIC AND KEMALISM? COURSES (A DESIGN OF A NEW UNIT UNDER THE LIGHTS OF EXISTING COURSE BOOKS, TEACHER AND STUDENT VIEWS AND CONTEMPORARY PUBLICATIONS) `The Armenian Issue?-which is taught in? The History of Turkish Republic Revolution and Kemalism? lessons for the senior students of high schools bound to Turkish National Education-is aimed to be re-evaluated in terms of history education considering the latest situation of the world.In this paralel, from the conclusions of the scientific and contemporary publications,the parts which can be used in the teaching of ?Armenian Issue?are fixed and under the lights of teacher and student views,it is aimed to be used in ?The History of Revolution? lessons. Moreover; with the help of this project,it is aimed to provide scientific data and contribution to the forthcoming studies to be done on the Armenian Issue. In this study, not only the importance of history education is mentioned but examples from the conclusions of some studies being done throughout the world are given,as well. The parts taught in today?s history books about the Armenian Issue and Turkish-Armenian relations have been thoroughly examined, related parts are evaluated in terms of history education and questioned if they are appropriate for the students.In the other part of my study,scientific and contemporary publications on the Armenian İssue published in the last decade are examined.The parts mentioned in those studies which are important for education are fixed to be included in `The History of Revolution and Kemalism?textbooks. Furthermore, since the study is done in Çankırı, the sources and documents about the Armenian Issue and Turkish-Armenian relations provided from the local archives are fixed and evaluated in the new unit.Moreover, these sources of local content are also mentioned in the part which tells about the conclusions of the related contemporary publications. While preparing the content of the new unit and its characteristics,some questionnaires aiming teacher and student points of views relating to the teaching of Armenian Issue are held to make the new unit teacher and student centered. The questionnaire is a descriptive study done at six high schools with 240 students and 20 history teachers. Design of a new unit is done in accordance with the objectives which the result of the questionnaire impose. The new unit based on the existing textbooks,relating contemporary and scientific publications and both teacher and student views is prepared for the benefiting of teachers and students in history lessons. The opinions of the teachers and students who have benefiitted from this new unit are questioned and the contributions of the study to the teaching of the Armenian Issue are objectively transferred. The conclusions of the research have been revised in terms of its assistance to the teaching of history, and some proposals are made to support this.
