Abstract (EN)

Introduction: Implant treatment continues to increase after tooth loss. Bone resorption around the implant poses a problem. This study aims to investigate the effects of local application of alendronate sodium trihydrate on bone resorption and implant stability. Materials and Methods: 12 people with total edentulism in the mandible were included in the study. An overdenture prosthesis supported by two implants is planned for the mandible. The study was designed as a randomized and split-mouth with 12 implants in each group. After the control side of the patient was washed with saline, the implant was placed, and the flap was closed. The other implant socket was washed with a solution containing 2,5 mg/ml Alendronate Sodium Trihydrate in 1 ml volume, the implant was placed, and the flap was closed. Implant stability was measured intraoperatively by resonance frequency analysis at day 10, weeks 4, 6, 8, and 12. Postoperative pain was evaluated with the VAS scale on days 1, 3, and 7. It was evaluated for edema and ulceration in the postoperative period. Results: ISQ values measured at different times according to groups did not show a statistically significant difference (p>0.050). In the test group, ISQ median values measured at different times showed a statistically significant difference (p = 0.024). Conclusion: Although there was no statistical difference between the groups, it was concluded that local application of alendronate sodium trihydrate may have a positive effect on the osseointegration process.
