As in all over the world, the problem of substance use in our country is important for adolescents, who are the subject of highest level of new and different researches and under highest risk in society. This study aims to determine self-regulatory skills and family functions in adolescents using substances and not using substances. Therefore, a cross-sectional design was used in this study. The population of this study is 6792 students who are studying at high schools of Samandağ in Hatay. The sample of this study is 670 students who studied in the 2017-2018 academic year at 12 high-schools. The Adolescent Self-Regulatory Inventory and Family Assessment Inventory were used in order to obtain data. Also, Introductory Information Form was used in this study. ANOVA, digit, percentage, Bonferroni, Student t, Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis, All pairwise ve spearman were used in order to analyze data. In our study, the usage rate of any substances which are cigarette, alcohol and illegal drugs was found as ¼ (%25.8). The mean scores of the ADÖ subscale of the adolescents who used substance were found to be above two, unhealthy, and the mean scores of the ADÖ subscale of the adolescents who did not use the substance were perceived as unhealthy except for the general functions subscale. A statistically weak positive correlation was found in the variables such as gender, class level, school type, parental quarrel status, family smoking and alcohol use, with ADÖ and EÖDBÖ among adolescents who use and do not use substance. It is found that the relationship between self-regulatory skills and family functions was statistically significant in adolescents with and without substance use. According to results of this study, it can be stated that adolescents using substances perceive family functions unhealthier and have lower self- regulatory skills than adolescents not using substances. It was observed that if their parents have often quarrels, adolescents who use and do not use substance perceived family functions as unhealthy and their self-regulatory skills are low. Considering these results, trainings about the effects of family disputes on the development of adolescents should be planned for the families.
