Internalized stigma, self-efficacy and treatment motivation in patients with substance use disorders

The aim of this study was to determine the levels of internalized stigmatization, self- efficacy and treatment motivation in patients with substance use disorders and to assess the relationship between internalized stigmatization and self-efficacy and treatment motivation in these individuals. The study was conducted between June 18, 2017 and January 15, 2018 with 181 patients who received treatment at the Substance Abuse Treatment and Training Center. Data were collected using "Personal Information Form", "Internalized Stigmatization Scale for Mental Illness (ISSMI)", "Treatment Motivation Questionnaire (TMQ)" and "Self-Efficacy Questionnaire". The data were evaluated by SPSS with number, percentage, average, standard deviation and correlation analysis. As a result of the study, it was determined that there was a significant negative correlation between self-efficacy total score and total score of the ISSMI (p <0.05). It was determined that there was a significant positive correlation between treatment motivation total score and total score of ISSMI (p <0.05). It was determined that there was a significant negative correlation between the external motivation subscale of the Treatment Motivation Questionnaire and the self-efficacy total score (p <0.05). It was determined that self-efficacy levels decreased as patients' internalized stigmatization levels increased, and the level of treatment motivation increases as the level of internalized stigmatization increases. It is believed that determining the effect of internalized stigmatization on treatment motivation and self efficacy levels in this group of patients will lead to reduce recurrent admission and substance use in this group of patients.
