Dissolution kinetics of magnesium metal in boric acid solutions

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the dissolution kinetics of metallic magnesium in boric acid solutions was investigated. In the experimental study, the effects of the concentration of boric acid, reaction temperature, stirring speed, average particle size, and solid to liquid ratio were determined on the dissolution rate of magnesium. It was determined that the dissolution rate of magnesium increased with increasing boric acid concentration and reaction temperature, and with decreasing solid to liquid ratio and particle size. It was observed that the stirring speed has not a significant effect on the dissolution rate. A mathematical model representing the dissolution of magnesium in boric acid solutions was constructed using the experimental data obtained. It was determined that the dissolution rate obeyed the first order kinetic model. The activation energy for the dissolution process was calculated to be 40.12 kJ/mol.
