The effect of interpersonal cognitive distortions and attachment styles of patients with major depressive disorder to marital adjustment

In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect on marital adjustment of interpersonel cognitive distortions and attachment styles of patients with major depressive disorder.This descriptive study was conducted with 100 married patients who were admitted to Gaziantep Nizip State Hospital Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic with the diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder and volunteered to participate in this study. The datas were collected using ''Personal Information Form'', " Beck Depression Inventory", "Interpersonal Cognitive Distortions Scale", "Inventory of Experiences in Close Relationship", "Marital Adjustment Scale". The relationships between the scales were tested with Spearman Correlation Coefficient. it was found that average Beck Depression Inventory score of the patients was 29,64±10,62 and there was no significant difference between the genders in terms of scale scores. It was determined that there was a negative relationship between major depressive disorder and marital adjustment (p<0.05). It was detected a negative correlation in anxiety subscale between " Marital Adjustment Scale" and "Inventory of Experiences in Close Relationship" and also a significant positive correlation was found in avoidance subscale between " Marital Adjustment Scale" and "Inventory of Experiences in Close Relationship" (p<0.05)..There was a positively weak relationship between İnterpersonel Cognitive Distortions Scale and Beck Depression Scale, but there was no correlation with the Marital Adjustment Scale (p<0.05). As a result, it was revealed that as the depressive symptom level of the patients increased, their cognitive distortions and attachment anxiety increased and marital adjustment decreased. Psychiatric nurses included patients with major depressive disorder; It is recommended that psychotherapeutic approaches are used to reduce cognitive distortions related to relationships, to support the development of appropriate attachment behavior and to improve marital adjustment.
