Effects of traditional music listening on intonation

The purpose of the study is to learn the effects of traditional music listening on intonation. The research was performed by the Music Teaching department of Gazi University Gazi Faculty of Education in the 2009-2010 academic year on first and fourth year violin students. (N=35)In this study, both descriptive and experimental methods were used. In this way, the quantitive and qualitative data were gathered separately, analyzed, and as a result, the data gathered were compiled. At the descriptive stage of the research, a special interview technique was used with student subjects in order to determine their music genre preferences.To prepare for the experimental stage, simple Rast and Hüseyni melodies were composed to be later played by the students. A professional canun musician played and we recorded a full Rast and Hüseyni taksim and another complete traditional instrumental piece.In the experimental stage, the students played the newly composed Rast and Hüseyni melodies and the pitch was measured through the recordings they played. At the next step in the experimental stage, the students listened to the canun player?s recordings and then they replayed and recorded the simple Rast and Hüseyni melodies and the pitch was again measured.The interview data on music preference and the first student recording measurement of pitch before they listened to the professional canun recording were analyzed. Then the pitch measurements of the students? playing, pre- and post-listening of the professional recording, were again analyzed.The analysis showed that with both traditional and classical music listeners, after listening to the professional Rast recording, the pitch measurements in their post-listening playing differed statisticly from one another with the Rast melody; conversely, after listening to the professionally-recorded Hüseyni piece, there was not a significant difference between the groups? pitch measurements when playing the Hüseyni melody.
