The contribution of agriculture and livestock to the economy in Malatya

Malatya stands out as a region with high agricultural and livestock productivity compared to neighboring areas. This success is attributed to Malatya's unique topography and climatic conditions, which allow for the cultivation of a variety of agricultural products. The most well-known agricultural product of Malatya is apricot. The region accounts for half of Turkey's fresh apricot production and 80-85% of its dried apricot production. Additionally, Malatya produces 6% of the world's fresh apricots and 50-55% of its dried apricots. These figures make Malatya a significant player in the global apricot sector. In the livestock sector, Malatya has high potential compared to other regional provinces, but it faces challenges in fully utilizing this potential. Specifically, production in small ruminant livestock is relatively low. However, the poultry farms established in Malatya have made the region stand out in poultry production. Despite some existing challenges, agricultural and livestock activities in Malatya continue. Enhancing institutionalization in export activities and improving marketing efforts could be beneficial for both Malatya and the national economy.
