Africa in Malta's foreign policy

This thesis examines the foreign policy pursued by the Republic of Malta in African countries that began gaining independence after World War II. The study discusses Malta's political structure, history, and general foreign policy approach, focusing specifically on its political and economic relations with African countries. Due to its geographical position, Malta has strong political and economic ties with Africa, particularly the northern region. Motivated by the growing global interest in Africa and its strategic position between Europe and Africa, Malta aims to extend its connections with North Africa to the entire continent. In this context, Malta announced the "Malta-Africa: Strategy for Partnership Plan 2020–2025" in 2020 through the Ministry for Foreign and Trade Promotion. This plan is notable for being the first strategic partnership program targeting Africa launched by a non-European Union entity within the EU. With this program, Malta seeks a larger presence in the African market, which has drawn global attention recently due to its increasing growth and trade potential. As an EU member and due to its geographical location, Malta has the potential to serve as a trade bridge between the Union and the African continent. Furthermore, Malta's shared colonial history with many African nations as a former British colony and its lack of an imperialist past is seen as an advantage in developing relations with African countries. In conclusion, fostering economic and diplomatic relations is central to Malta's approach to Africa. Being a member of the EU and the Commonwealth of Nations facilitates Valletta's efforts to strengthen ties with African countries. Maltese leaders aim to leverage the country's strategic location to serve as a commercial, logistical, and diplomatic bridge between the EU and African nations.
