The reference ranges of total antioxidant capacity, total oxidant capacity and superoxyde dismutase in healthy subjects living in manisa region

Aim: In this study, we evaluated the levels of total antioxidant capacity(TAS), total oxidant capacity(TOS) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) which are the major components of oxidant-antioxidant systems in healthy adults and we aimed to determine reference ranges of these parameters in Manisa region.Material and Method: In this study, serum specimens from 219 healthy adults aged between 20-67 years were collected after 12 hours of fasting. TAS and TOS levels are measured with spectrophotometric, and SOD levels with ELİSA method are measured in Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory of Celal Bayar University Hafsa Sultan Hospital in Manisa. Our results calculated with one-way anova and X² tests by using SPSS 15.0 statistical program.Results: The reference ranges of TOS for 20-67 aged women were 3.14-25.39, and for men were 1.25-26.20 ?mol H2O2 equivalent/L; reference ranges of OSİ for women were 0.04-0.23 and for men were 0.01-0.19; reference ranges of SOD for women were 0.18-1.16, and for men were 0.07-1.18 U/mL. However, the reference ranges of TAS in 20-49 aged women were 0.95-2.13 and in 20-49 aged men were 1.21-2.35, with statistically difference reference to over 50 years of adults which were 1.25-2.74 mmol Trolox equivalent/L.Conclusion: The antioxidant and oxidant parameters involved in the etiology of many diseases, due to a tight relationship with regional, environmental, nutritional and lifestyle factors becomes even more important in determining population-based reference ranges. TAS, TOS, OSİ and SOD levels were evaluated as significantly different in gender and also for TAS with reference to age over 50 years. Our study defined in Manisa region is the first report in our region and therefore original. We believe that our study will be helpful for the same studies which done in wider populations.Keywords: Total antioxidant capacity, total oxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, reference ranges.
