Neologisms in Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and the translation techniques used in its Turkish translation

This study examines the translation techniques of neologisms applied in Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. The Handmaid's Tale, our corpus, is defined as a utopia by its author Margaret Atwood. The word itself is a neologism, a blend word consisting of utopia and dystopia. This definition of Atwood was used in the textual analysis of the corpus and subsequently, unfolding the effect of neologisms on feminist discourse. The term neologism can be defined as new words or words with new senses. In this study, the neologisms in The Handmaid's Tale are categorized according to Peter Newmark's classification. Later, the technique or the techniques used when rendering the categorized neologisms into Turkish are revealed. Lucia Molina and Amparo Hurtado Albir's translation techniques were preferred for data examination. The general and neologism-specific translation techniques were determined, and then the data that do not fit into the categories were identified. These examples enabled us to reveal types of neologisms that are not included in Newmark's model as well as the translation techniques that are not involved in Molina and Albir's compilation. From this perspective, our study tests the preferred models of neologism categories and translation techniques in practice, and the most frequently used techniques in neologism translations were determined in it. Finally, the data we obtained here were compared with the results of other studies in the neologism translations literature.
