Social reflections in Mario Vargas Llosa's novel 'The Time of The Hero'

It is inevitable that political, social and economic developments of societies will be reflected in literary works. The developments that started with the arrival of Spanish in Latin America determined the fate of Latin American literature. This thesis examines the social reflections in the novel Time of the Hero, in the context of outdoor and indoor spaces. The novel is written by Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa, one of the pioneers of the "boom" movement, which emerged in Latin America in the 1960s. The views of Hungarian philosopher George Lukács and French philosopher Lucien Goldmann, two of the prominent names of Marxist criticism, have formed the basis of the method used in the thesis. Historical events that serve as an example for the situation in the region are studied in terms of political, social and economic aspects. In addition to these transformations in Latin America, the literary history of the region that covers between the arrival of the Spanish to the continent in the 15th century and the emergence of the "boom" movement is also researched. Since the study of the author's individual sensitivity is an important element in achieving social reality, Mario Vargas Llosa's life story and ideological attitude are surveyed. This thesis tries to present the fact that the military high school forms a Peruvian microcosm that brings together different social groups and the fact that author focuses issues like injustice and social corruption that have existed in the social history of the Latin America.
