The comparison of the novel Die Wand of Marlen Haushofer and the movie Die Wand of Julian Pölsler in terms of their forms of expression

This study examines the relationship between literature and their film adaption in terms of the transformation of the content. To achive this goal, Julian Pölsler´s film adaption of Marlen Haushofers novel Die Wand is examined by its narrative patterns. The research questions identified for this study are as follows: How the novel Die Wand was transferred to the film, is there a common transformation relationship between literature and film? Does the film show a distinct transformation? The novel Die Wand was tought to be unfilmable. Can the adaption with its narration and technical effects convey the novels layers of meaning? What are the differences and similarities between the novel and the film, based on the narrative techniques of the film and Julian Pölsler´s interpretation? Does the film like the novel contain any biographical traces of Marlen Haushofer? It is emphasized that only a similarity relationship can be found between literary works and their adaptation, due to the existence of unique narrative techniques of the film and the way in which the filmmakers interprets the literary work. For the adaption of Die Wand Julian Pölsler – in order to reflect the layers of meaning – used unique narration techniques, and acts independent of the novels narration. The adaptation, as in the novel, revealed that the biography of author Marlen Haushofer contributed to the understanding of these layers.
