Examining alternative assessment approaches used in mathematics textbooks

Abstract (EN)
This study aimed to determine the frequency and manner of inclusion of alternative assessment approaches in middle school Mathematics textbooks during the 2023-2024 academic year. The study examined the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade Mathematics textbooks approved by the Ministry of National Education and the Board of Education for the 2023-2024 academic year, using document analysis as the data collection technique. The Mathematics textbooks for grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 used during the 2023-2024 academic year were analyzed for alternative assessment approaches. Firstly, textbooks at each grade level were analyzed on a topic and unit basis to determine the presence of alternative assessment approaches. Subsequently, the alternative assessment approaches were grouped according to learning domains. The frequency of inclusion of each alternative assessment approach was determined, followed by the distribution of these approaches in the textbooks based on their intended purposes. The data obtained from the analysis were tabulated using descriptive analysis methods. The findings revealed that while traditional assessment techniques were predominantly focused on in Mathematics textbooks, alternative methods were less emphasized. It was observed that alternative assessment approaches in Mathematics textbooks were not evenly distributed across grade levels. The highest frequency of alternative assessment approaches was found at the 8th-grade level. When examining the distribution of alternative assessment approaches across Mathematics learning domains, it was noted that they were most prevalent in the "geometry and measurement" and "numbers and operations" domains. In conclusion, although there was insufficient emphasis on alternative assessment approaches in middle school Mathematics textbooks, it is believed that such methods could contribute to a more comprehensive evaluation of students and enhance the effectiveness of the educational process.
