Mathematical resilience and metaphors related to mathematics course: A cluster analysis approach

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between mathematical resilience, metaphor regarding learning mathematics, mathematic teacher and achievement in mathematics, mathematical resilliance and mathematic achievement, and also classify the students according to these variables by cluster analysis. The sample of the study was consisted of 500 students who study in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades of the two middle schools in the province of Bolu in 2015-2016 academic year. Data on students' metaphors based on learning mathematics, be successful in mathematics and mathematics teacher themes have been obtained through the "Metaphors regarding Learning Mathematics Lesson Scale", "Metaphors regarding Achievement in Mathematics" and "Metaphors regarding Mathematics Teacher Scale" that was developed by Yalçın (2012). Data on students' mathematical resilience have been obtained through the "Mathematical Resilience Scale" that was developed by Kooken, Welsh, Mccoach, Wilder and Lee (2015). The achievement scores of the students in the mathematics course, as the year-end achievement scores of the 2016-2017 academic year, have been obtained in writing from the relevant school administrations. According to the results obtained from the study; it has been achived that the students, who have positive metaphors about their teacher, mathematics lesson and be successful in mathematics, both mathematical resilience and mathematical achievement are more higher.
