Examining the opinions of secondary school students and teachers on the use of chatgpt artificial intelligence application in mathematics education

The purpose of this research is to examine the opinions of middle school students and mathematics teachers regarding the use of the ChatGPT, artificial intelligence application in mathematics education. The study utilized a qualitative research method called "case study." The sample of the research consists of 17 students attending a public middle school in the city of Van during the fall semester of the 2023-2024 academic year, and 16 mathematics teachers working in different schools in the same city. A "semi-structured interview form" was administered to the groups before and after the application, and descriptive analysis was conducted. The analysis revealed that teachers employ various methods to improve student achievement in mathematics classes. Participants expressed that AI-based mathematics education could be presented as an innovative method in teaching, requiring integration into education, supporting the learning process, and facilitating student-centered lessons. Additionally, it was observed that students use AI-based educational tools more than teachers. Teachers stated that they could achieve an innovative approach in education and support individual learning by using the CHATGPT application, while students expressed that they could fill in their subject gaps, foster creativity, and serve as a source of inspiration. Participants mentioned that the application could assist in many areas of mathematics and enhance collaboration, although some participants also expressed concerns that it could negatively affect collaboration. Participants pointed out both positive aspects, such as speeding up the learning process and increasing its efficiency, and disadvantages, such as being paid and creating dependency, of the application. While there were positive opinions about the activity questions related to the application, negative opinions about their excessive detail and tediousness were also noted. Although some participants expressed a desire for AI application courses to be taught in schools, others opposed it.
