Comparison of vitamin D, vitamin B12 and TSH levels among individuals wi̇th migren and tension type headache and without migren and tension type headache

Objective: Migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) are common chronic clinical entities. This study is aimed to evaluate the relationship between migraine and TTH and vitamin D, vitamin B12 and TSH levels. Methods: 210 patients who applied to the Neurology outpatient clinic of Yüzüncü Yıl University Medical Faculty were included in the study. International Headache Society (IHS) 2013 criteria and clinical evaluation were used for the diagnosis of migraine and TTH. All three groups (migraine, TTH and control) consisted of 70 participants. Vitamin D, vitamin B12 and TSH levels of 210 participants were evaluated. Results: The control group consisted of 30 men and 40 women, the average age of the group was 32,21 ± 10,14. The migraine group consisted of 54 women and 16 men, the average age of the group was 31,36 ± 9,48. The TTH group consisted of 53 women and 17 men, the average age of the group was 34,03 ± 12,28. Vitamin D and vitamin B12 levels were significantly lower in both migraine and TTH groups than in the control group. Vitamin D and vitamin B12 levels were similar in migraine and TTH groups. There was no difference in TSH levels between all 3 groups. Conclusion: This study showed that vitamin D and vitamin B12 levels were significantly lower in migraine and TTH. These results can help us to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of TTH and migraine and to gain new perspectives in the treatment.
