The effect of utilizing the smart board in mathematics teaching on 10th grade students, their academic standings, their attitude towards mathematics and their self efficacy levels

This research is intended to determine how utilizing the smart board in mathematics teaching affects 10th grade students, their academic standings, their attitude towards mathematics and their self efficacy levels.The research is a semi-experimental study and based on the post-test control group model. The sample of the research consists of 124 students studying in the 10th grade of a public school during 2008 ? 2009 academic year. The research was carried out with the participation of 64 students in the test group using the smart board (computer ? projection ? board connection) while the remaining 60 students in the control group used computer-projection only. This was implemented for five weeks. Functions of the second degree were selected as samples for the sub learning area.Both qualitative and quantitative data were gathered during the research. The data was acquired by means of ?Quadratic Achievement Test?, ?Attitude Measure as regards Mathematics?, ?Functions of the Second Degree Self-efficacy Level Measure as regards Sub-learning Area?, ?Attitude Measure as regards the Smart Board in Mathematics Lesson?, ?Functions of the Second Degree Achievement Test? and interview forms. The qualitative data was analyzed having utilized SPSS 15.0 statistical packaged software whereas the quantitative data was analyzed having read by the researcher and gathered under specific themes.It was understood from the data gathered from the research that the use of smart board did not make a significant difference between the academic achievements of the test and control group students in terms of functions of second degree. It was understood that there was a significant difference in favor of the test group between the students in terms of the attitude levels of the students of both groups towards mathematics at the end of the lessons taught by using the smart board. There was no significant statistical difference found to be between the self-efficacy senses of both test and control groups in terms of sub-learning area. It was determined that the attitude of the students towards the smart board in mathematics lesson was at average level.It is considered that the results gathered from the research shall contribute in the studies to be carried out on the use of smart board in mathematics learning.
