Examination and application example of Matrakcı Nasuh's city miniatures

Described as the Renaissance artist of the 16th century, Matrakçı Nasuh (? -1564) stood out with her unique style that he created in the Ottoman descriptive arts and set an example for the muralists after him. The fact that the miniature is a manuscript art among the Ottoman descriptive arts reveals that it can be evaluated within the picture-text relationship. In this thesis study, twenty city miniatures selected from the works of Matrakçı Nasuh, Menazilname and Sinan Çavuş's Tarih-i Feth-i Sikloş, Estargon and İstol(n)i Belgrade (Süleymanname), were analysed descriptively, taking into account the compositional features and design principles of the period. While examining the city miniatures, the basic concepts of the miniature art, the techniques used, the design and composition features were determined, and in this context, the development and period characteristics of the Turkish miniature art were explained with sample works. The features of the early and classical period in Ottoman miniature art were defined within the stylistic framework of the period, and the muralists and their works, which are examples of this period, are also mentioned. By considering Matrakçı Nasuh's life and works, it was revealed how he came to life and reflected in his intellectual personality and works, with the emphasis on language, culture and belief diversity of his period. Iznik city miniature by Matrakçı Nasuh was chosen as an application example. The architecture of today's Iznik Hagia Sophia Mosque was transferred to the tile surface by modelling the technical and compositional features of Matrakçı Nasuh in the original miniature by taking photos from the front and from a bird's eye view. The applicability of these two arts, which are in different disciplines, and the findings obtained were evaluated in the conclusion section.
