Majd ad-dīn Ibn Athir al-Jazarī (d. 606/1210) and his work Shafi fi Sharh Musnad al-Shafi'i

This thesis is about Majd Ad-Dīn Ibn Athir Al-Jazari (d. 606/1210), who was one of the hadith scholars of the Great Seljuk era of the VII/XIII century, and his work "Shafi Fi Sharh Musnad Al-Shafi'ı", which he wrote for Imam Shafii's Musnad. The study consists of an introduction and three sections. In the introduction section, information is given on the subject, purpose and importance of the thesis as well as the method of the study, the conceptual framework and the references. In the first section, the period in which Ibn al-Athir al-Jazari lived was studied in terms of political, social, scientific and cultural aspects. In addition, his life, teachers, students as well as his official duty in Mosul Atabegate and his works were discussed. In the second section, Musnad of Imam Al-Shafi'i was introduced, and written and printed copies of Musnad, the number of hadiths in Musnad, the authenticity of the hadiths and other annotations on Musnad were identified. The works (and their authors) of Islamic sciences that Ibn al-Athir used as a reference in the annotation were presented. In the third section, annotation method used by Ibn al-Athir were addressed. The explanations of words and concepts in the annotation, the explanations of the hadiths related to their chains of narrators, the biographies of the narrators, the deduction of fiqh judgements from the hadiths, fiqh views of other sects, especially the Shafi'i sect, were included.
