The historical development process of tourism, service, trade and residental places in the Mecidiyeköy-Zincirlikuyu axle

As a result of rapid developments in information communication technologies in the 20th century, industrial society turns into be an information society. These developments bring along the process of reconstruction of the cities. With the globalisation and increasing pressure of competition, some functions of these cities disappear or change while they are turned into the cities of tomorrow?s information age. Moreover, this pressure creates the need for re-definition of the previous functions by establishing some new functions. In the world, some cities stand out in the field of health, some in finance, some in tourism; so such issues as tourism, service, commerce and housing infrastructures become one of the most important issues in the competitive fields of the cities.As a result of all these developments, city centers turn into the fields chosen by the service sector which has a complex structure. With the construction of Boğaziçi Bridge, borders of the city center began to expand from Beyoğlu and Nişantaşı along Büyükdere Street and reach the area of Mecidiyeköy-Zincirlikuyu. Focus of the area?s accessibility turns into the focuses where technological infrastructure opportunuties are dense, so it leads the area choice of service sector which needs face to face interview as well as requiring this dense infrastructure. Producing services which draw attention of the real estate sector as well prefer especially prestigious and equipped A type office areas in the region. This situation necessitates the deployment of the new projects in the area. This study has been prepared firstly in order to understand the definition and development process of tourism, service, commerce and housing, and then to present what kind of a development process is observed in the area of Mecidiyeköy-xvZincirlikuyu which is one of the areas where these sectors become dense in the European Side of İstanbul. In the first chapter, a general literature summary is available about tourism, service, commerce and housing issues, the aim of the study is identified, also the scope of work and method are expressed under the title of ?Hypothesis?. In the second chapter, the definitions of tourism, service, commerce and housing are submitted and various views about their classification are delivered. Historical development process of the sectors of tourism, service, commerce and housing as well as theories about them are examined. In the third chapter, under the title of reflection of economical and political developments, which are observed after 1980, on tourism, service, commerce and housing; the effect of legal regulations is mentioned as well as the development of these sectors in İstanbul.In the fourth chapter, the location of study field is examined and a sheet of identity is prepared. A short history and physical specifications of Mecidiyeköy-Zincirlikuyu are analysed. Under the title of Field Analyse, usage sheets of the buildings are prepared as well as choosing and examining random examples from tourism, service, commerce and housing buildings. At the end of this examination, recent development of the area?s architecture is tried to be proved.In the fifth chapter, a general evaluation of the thesis study is carried out and results in the end of the study are expressed.
