Production of tio2 from medical waste scraps, modification and determining of application fields

TiO2 is mainly applied as pigments, adsorbents, filters, coatings, semiconductors, and dielectric materials. In recent years, TiO2 has been well known as a semiconductor with photocatalytic activities and has a great potential for applications such as environmental purification. TiO2 exists mostly as rutile, anatase and brookite phases. Milling processes for production of TiO2 (rutile) have been investigated in this study for research different applications fields.TiO2 rutile powders were produced by using a combined method of ball milling and annealing. Powders were fabricated from waste Ti6Al4V chips by milling for 1.5h, 3h, 6h, and 15 h with SPEXTM Dualmill using stainless steel vial and balls. After milling process, powder samples were annealed at 600 oC, 700 oC and 1000 oC for different times under air. Microstructurel analysis, phase and thermal characterization of the milled powder samples were carried out by using X-Ray Diffraction Technique (XRD), Thermogravimetry/Differential Thermal Analyzer (DTA/TG) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Particle size of the annealed powders were measured by using Particle Analyzer (Malvern Mastersizer) and these results are reported and discussed.After production of TiO2 powders, Fe-doped TiO2 was prepared by high-energy ball milling using Fe powders as the starting material in Part 1 to determine the application field. The structure and photocatalytic behaviours were examined respectively. Basic Yellow 28 [(BY 28) C12H27N3O5S] commonly used as a textile dye, could be photocatalytically degraded using TiO2 as catalyst and irradiated by UV lamp. The aim of the study in Part 1 is to investigate the photocatalytic decomposition of textile dye Basic Yellow 28 in the presence of Fe doped TiO2 irradiated by the UV light. Part 1 studies showed that the produced materials are not suitable for photocatalytic degradation of BY28 and Part 2 studies were investigated for another TiO2 application as Al2TiO5 ceramic. Results indicate that produced TiO2 could be used as Al2TiO5 ceramic material instead of commercial Al2TiO5 in industry.
