Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of media education by examining media literacy studies. In the first part of the work was prepared for this purpose, the concept of media under the heading of media literacy was briefly mentioned and then the concept of traditional media was introduced by making the event more specific. Under the heading of the traditional media concept, attempts have been made to examine historical adventures along with the emergence of traditional mass media such as newspapers, cinema, radio and television. The concept of new media has been discussed in the continuation of the subject and the internet has been mentioned in the historical adventure with the emergence process of the new media. In this section, the historical adventures of social media and digital media, which have a major role in the new media, are examined. In the second chapter; Under the heading of media literacy and concepts, the concept of literacy along with the concept of media literacy has been tried to explain traditional, visual and new media literacy from the types of literacy that emerged with the developing technology. Subsequently, under the title of historical development of media literacy, media literacy in the world and in Turkey has been discussed. Later, the media literacy principles set forth by Masterman, Aufderhide and Scheibe and Rogow were discussed. This chapter has been finalized with titles about the aims and social effects of media literacy. In the third chapter; Approaches to media literacy under the heading of media literacy theories are covered under the headings of Grafting, Protection, Strength, Critical and Analytical approach. In the course of his discussions, Shepherd examined the media literacy models developed by Potter and Davis and addressed seven major discussions in the media literacy movement, contemporary debates on media literacy. In the thesis, comprehensive literature search has been made as methodology and current sources have been consulted. Key words: Media, Traditional Media, New Media, Media Literacy
