Abstract (EN)
Turkey, because of its geographical location, is a bridge position between Asia and Europe. While in its east ve south there is an environment in which predominantly conflict and instabilities have been prevailing, in its west there exist European countries with high levels of welfare and human rights. This reality leads Turkey to be used as a temporary station for migrants or a temporary destination place in the transition to European countries as a result of civil wars and disorders that have been experienced in the Middle East and Asia. In global terms, in an era in which migration and asylum movements have substantially increased, Turkey has been hosting lots of migrants. This de facto situation gives rise to some cultural differences and troubles related to how to live together. These differences and troubles are disseminated to society by the press with its high and strong representative. The language and discourses used by the press in forming attitudes and perceptions about migrants play an important role in the formation of attitudes and perceptions against them. In this context, another important factor is also gender. Moreover, the understanding that how to form attitudes and perceptions concerning migrants and refugees is an important matter in terms of overcoming the coherence problem. Accordingly, the aim of this thesis is to be able to make a critical assessment of the representations of male migrants in media that have been relatively less explored. To do so, the news of chosen three daily newspapers (Hürriyet, Sözcü, Sabah) on the related issue for the period 2019-2021 is looked into. The results of the research point to the fact that a discriminatory language has been used against male migrants, they have been placed in the news negatively affecting the perception of the society against migrants, male migrants have been mentioned extensively in crime-, violence-, and murder-related news, and in this news, male migrants have been shown as if they are offender, rapist, suspect, and the like.
