The relationship of megaloblastic anemia and thyroid dysfunction according to sex and menopause

Özet (EN)

In our study, all cases were evaluated for megaloblastic anemia (MA) and thyroid dysfunction. Patients having only MA and patients having MA and tyhroid dysfunction were analyzed statistically according to sex and meapause first of all, then the distribution of all cases according to age were investigated.93 (% 59.2) cases of 157 patients in the study were women and 64 (% 40.8) cases were men. Ratio of women to men was 1.4 and there was a dominance of women. We divided 157 cases into two groups; patients having only MA and patients having MA and thyroid dysfunction. We investigated the distribution of all cases according to sex. It was found that 124 (%79) cases had only MA and 33 (%40,3) cases had MA with thyroid dysfuntion. 74 (% 59.7) cases of 124 patients having only MA were women and 50 (%40.3) were men. MA was more common in women having only MA but this result wasn?t statistically significant (p>0.05).When we analyzed 33 cases having MA and thyroid dysfunction, 19 (%57.6) patients were women and 14 (%42.4) were men. This result wasn?t statistically significant (p>0.05). 15 (%45.5) of 33 cases had hyperthyroidism, 7(%21.2) had hypothyroidism,11 (%33.3) cases had low or high free T3 with normal TSH and normal freeT4.In our study, It was found that 35 (%37.6) cases of 93 women were in menopause and 58 (% 62.4) women were not. 74 (%79.6) cases of 93 women had only MA. 25 (%33.8) cases of 74 women having only MA were in menopause and 49 (% 66.2) women were not. This distribution was not statistically significant (p> 0.05) . 19 (%20.5) cases of 93 women had MA and thyroid disfuntion. 10 (% 52.6) cases of 19 women were in menopause and 9 (% 47.4) were not in menopause .There wasn?t statistically significant in the distribution of MA and thyroid dysfuntion according to menopause (p>0.05). As a result of our study ; MA were more common in women having menstrual cycle, even if it was not statistically significant.The peak incidence of all cases in our study were between 40-49 years ? old and mean age was 44.6 ± 15.4. 50 (% 40.3) cases of 124 patients having only MA were under 40 years and 74 (% 59.7) cases were 40 years and over. According to cases under 40 years, MA was statistically more common in cases 40 years and over (p= 0.042).42 (% 56.8) cases of 74 patients who were 40 years and over were women , 32 (%43.2) cases were men. When we compared MA cases 40 years and over according to sex , there wasn?t statistically significance (p>0.05) .When we categorized 124 cases having MA according to 45 years old , 68 (%58.8) cases of the 124 patients having only MA were under 45 years old and 56 (% 45.2) were 45 years and over. MA was more common under 45 years and that that was statistically significant (p=0.005). We divided our patients into 3 groups; cases over 40 years old, between 40-44 years old and 45 years and over,r . MA were more common in patients 45 years and over.In our study ; 7 (%21.2) cases of 33 cases having MA and thyroid dysfuntion were under 40 years old and 26 (%78.8) were 40 years and over. This result was statistically significant (p=0.042). We divided 33 cases accoding to 45 years old; 9 (%27.3) patients were under 45 years old, 24 (%72.7) were 45 years and over .This result was statitistically significant (p=0.005) .As a result of our study; ıt was thougt that regardless of sex and menopause, all people who are at 40-44 years old should be examined for MA and after 45 years old , all people should be examined for either MA or thyroid dysfuntion. It will be beneficial to make large studies in this area.
