Mehmet Besim Darkot's contributions to Turkish geography

Ordinary Prof. Dr. Mehmet Besim Darkot (1903–1990), recognized as one of Turkey's foremost geographers, served as a mentor to numerous scholars within the Geography Department at Istanbul University's Faculty of Letters. Throughout an academic career spanning nearly five decades, he contributed significantly as an educator and researcher across various educational levels, guiding countless students. Having pursued studies abroad in France, Darkot emerged as a pioneering figure in the advancement of geography in Turkey. His efforts extended beyond scholarly publications to actively promoting the growth of geography as a scientific discipline, strongly advocating for the modernization of the education system inspired by Western models during the late Ottoman era. Engaging with Darkot's extensive body of work—including his textbooks for primary, secondary, and higher education, atlases, encyclopedia entries, conference presentations, articles, and maps, many of which were groundbreaking—offers essential insights into the evolution of Turkish geography from the Ottoman Empire into the Republican period. This research, entitled "Mehmet Besim Darkot's Contributions to Turkish Geography," comprises six chapters and adopts a qualitative approach for both data collection and analysis. The study employs several qualitative research methodologies, including biographical analysis, historical research, and case study techniques. Additionally, to incorporate a quantitative aspect, citation analysis was conducted in the sixth chapter, providing numerical insights into the research. The purpose of this work is to highlight Mehmet Besim Darkot's impact—one of the founding figures of Republican-era geography—on the development of geographical studies in Turkey. Furthermore, as the first comprehensive biographical examination of Darkot, this study aims to evaluate his contributions from multiple angles and lay the groundwork for subsequent scholarly inquiries.
