The Research of space concept in historical process and comprehension of space today

In recent years, the broad use of computer technology and the rapid development of communication technology cause a transformation process in every aspects of life. The effects of such changes reflect themselves in architecture, too. The concepts such as "cyberspace", "virtual reality"and "virtual space" has been used every day more and more and providing new horizans to the architects in the design world. The aim of this paper is, starting from space to conceptualize the space and evaluate the relationship between conceptual space and virtual space. Firstly, varios definitions of physical space are considered. People take architecture as though they are looking at a postcard. In fact, the reality of architecture is different. Architecture is perceived at different times, from different angles of environment, light and view. Such factors related to architecture, produce visual images with various qualities, e.g. beatiful. Plans, sections, elevations, models etc. are the mediums used to define architecture and architectural space. However, such mediums, as can not present. The reality as it is, are not adequate enough. In order to understand architecture, it is necessary to live in it, perceive it during different periods of time, to see it from different point of views and move in it. In this respect, the fact of the perception of space is studied and the factors such as emptiness, movement, light, etc. effecting our perception of physical space are dicussed. Additionally, the development on the concept of physical space through history is studied on the examples and the periods in the history in which changes are observed, are determined. In the second stage, conceptualization and the fact of conceptual space basic ly are discussed. The fact of conceptual space in this section arose from the question of "Do we conceptualize space when we get through from physical space to virtual space?". In this respect, the space concept is discussed with regards to different disciplines such as literature and painting as to reach to the concept of space by demonstrating that the factors effecting our perception of physical space are existed in these areas, too. The sensations concretized by passing through the sensory organs, reaches to a concept according to the conditions of the environment. For instance, a parfüme used once previously, when smelled again, will take one back into the period that was used. While this happens, one will experience either positive or negative effects. Tha architectural spaces are to have same effects on people as the space, when considered as an "existence" with regards to its interaction with the person in it, has a soul. In this section, the discussions about architecture and the concept of space made by architects and tc yükseköğretim kuruui ix DOKÜMANTASYON MERKEZİphilosophers through out history, are also considered. Finally, the fact of conceptual space is defined. The third and the last section discusses the concepts of "virtuality" and "reality" under the name of "virtual reality". Not the virtual reality but the idea of virtual offers not the metaphor of indefinite prediction of future, superiority of future against the past and the present, but the promise of changing time-related location. Whereas the concept of cyberspace offers the idea of a design concept that is free from body and gravity, beyond physical properties. We can talk about the existence of factors enabling us to perceive the space in the virtual space. However, the contents of these factors are broadened the common aspect of the new space borders is that they have actually no border. Wall can not ne considered as a definite border. In this respect, the ideas of variety of architects and philisophers pertaining with virtuality are given. The issues that are related to the profession of architecture and the experiments carried out under under the name of "Media-art" which can form examples for virtual space medium are discussed. Finally, the existence of the factors enabling us to perceive the space in the fact of virtual space is discussed and the virtual space is defined.
