The design of public urban waterfronts in terms of spatial quality and placemaking the cases of İzmir and Bodrum

It may be asserted that the design qualities, processes and practices of coastal areas as public spaces that are part of the urban structure have significance from the aspect of urbanization and urban life. Coastal areas can contribute to the development of important public spaces in cities with qualified design strategies. At the same time, with such design strategies coastal areas can tranform to ''places'' for the urban individuals. Design in coastal areas contribute to urban identity as well as improving the quality of life. For this reason, in this study, the design principles for coastal areas, which are the priority public places, are discussed. In the study, design strategies and practices of coastal areas of various cities from the world and Turkish city has been examined. These examples show the contribution of coastal zone design implementations to public life. Izmir – Bostanlı and Bodrum city center cases are examined in more detail and the effects of the latest implementations on the coastal area on the users' perceptions were tried to be determined through survey with questionnaires. In the study the coastal areas was evaluated by the researcher within the framework of the design principles of public spaces and a survey is applied to the users to evaluate the perspective of the user. As a result of these discussions; by evaluating the social, economic, physical, societal, characteristics and problems of all the cases and the strategies developed specifically for the region with solutions for the needs within the framework of legal administrations; the design strategies are proposed for the cases of İzmir - Bostanlı and Bodrum city center coastal area which is the study area of the thesis.
