Makhûl al-Dımashqî and his work

The last quarter of the first century and the first quarter of the second century of the Hegira are important periods regarding initiation of codification and classification of hadith science. Therefore gathering information about hadith scholars, that lived in this period and made contribution to hadith science, and their works (if there is any) is crucial. Makhûl al-Dımashqî is one of the leading scholars who lived in Tâbi?un period. Currently there is no study has been made about him in our country. In order to fill this gap, this study is conducted. In this study, which is named as Makhûl al-Dımashqî and his work, the life of Makhûl al-Dımashqî and his position in the hadith rivayet has been studied. Moreover one of his works, Kitabu?s-Sunan fi?l-Fıkh that could not manage to reach to the present day is tried to be reconstructed.The study is mainly composed of an introduction and three main sections:Introduction section focuses on the Tâbi?un period and tries to indicate the importance of Tâbi?un in the process of transmission of Islamic knowledge during the beginning of codification and classification periods. Apart from that, in the introduction section purpose, method and importance of this study is briefly explained.In the first section, the whole life of Makhûl including his family and his moral personality examined as much as possible. His childhood, prison life during his adulthood, manumission, scientific journeys and traits, moral personality are tried to explained as much as possible.Second section is mainly about his tâbii, teachers, scholarship circle, students, students who have been prominent, position in terms of rebuttal and modification, the rivayet of his hadith and extermination of rivayets that are about accounts.In the third section, it is referred to the classification types of hadith literature and sunans and the method which Makhûl used in construction of his sunans. The titles of the chapters of sunan, the distribution of rivayets to these chapters, evaluation of rivayet according to the muntaha, context comparasion by Ebû Dâvûd?s Sunan are shown in a table. Later, an explication is made to find out if the rivayets of Makhûl is modified or not while passing to the next works.
