The effect of nursing approach applied according to meleis' transition theory on the self management and adaptation to the disease in patients with newly diagnosed diabetes

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the effect of the nursing approach applied according to Meleis' transition theory on the self management and adaptation to the disease in patients with newly diagnosed diabetes. Material and Method: The study was conducted as a one-group and pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design. The population of the study consisted of adult individuals who admitted to Turgut Özal Medical Center Endocrinology Outpatient Clinics and were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within the last 5 months and residing in Malatya City center. Study population was consisted of 40 patients. Data were collected between 1 July 2020 and 15 April 2021. In the collection of the data, the Descriptive Information Form, the Diabetes Self Management Questionnaire and Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale–Self Report were used. The nursing approach applied to according to Meleis' Transition Theory was carried out 3 times with a program by the researcher and a training booklet was given. Number, percentage, mean, standard deviation and dependent groups t test were used in the analysis of the data. Results: In the study, it was determined that there was a positive increase in the total score of the Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire after the intervention, and a positive decrease in the total score of the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale–Self Report, and the difference between the scores were statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: Nursing approach applied according to Meleis' Transition Theory on newly diagnosed diabetes patients increased patients' self-management and adaptation to the disease.
