Abstract (EN)

The work titled "Memalik-i Osmaniye'nin Tarih ve Coğrafya Lûgatı" (The Historical and Geographical Dictionary of the Ottoman Territories), prepared by Hamidiye Regiment Major Ali Cevad for use in military schools, serves as an encyclopedic dictionary on the history and geography of the Ottoman Empire. This work presents, in alphabetical order, important figures, historical events, and geographical regions of the Ottoman State. It includes biographies of Ottoman sultans from Osman Gazi to Sultan Abdülmecid, Crimean Khans, prominent statesmen, and poets. Additionally, it provides information on significant wars, reforms, and the structure of the state. The dictionary also features both poetic and prose works of poets. Ali Cevad Bey worked for many years (approximately 14 years) as a geography teacher in various rüşdiye and idadi schools, and between 1895 and 1899, he completed the publication of "Memalik-i Osmaniye'nin Tarih ve Coğrafya Lûgatı", which forms the subject of our thesis. The work consists of four volumes in total. While the first three volumes focus on the geography of the Ottoman State, the final volume deals with biographies, major events and battles, poets, and their works. From this perspective, the dictionary is a valuable source not only for Ottoman history but also for the fields of geography and literature.
