Abstract (EN)
Breast cancer is a common type of malignancy among woman that develops as a result of various genetic, environmental or hormonal factors. Several signaling pathways induce breast cancer pathogenesis. The PI3K (Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase) signaling pathway has been extensively studied in human malignancies also play important roles in tumorigenesis and cancer development by triggering cell proliferation and angiogenesis. p110α a subclass of the PI3K family is produced by PIK3CA, frequently mutated in cancer than other isoforms. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which are observed common in populations can affect the susceptibility to cancer and many diseases by changing protein structure or function. In our study; we aimed to evaluate the possible relationships between PIK3CA; C>A gene variation and PI3K serum levels in breast cancer risk and also by the regard of clinical, prognostic parameters. According to our study, there were no significant association between PIK3CA; C>A genotype and allele distributions in breast cancer patients and healthy individuals (p> 0,005). We performed stratification analyses by regarding tumor characteristics and other demographic variables but we did not detect any significant correlation between the genotypes distribution and these prognostic parameters. PI3K serum levels were observed higher in breast cancer patients compared to the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (p= 0,033). However, there were no significant association between genotype and allele distributions, clinical and prognostic parameters in terms of PI3K serum levels. In conclusion we suggest that serum PI3K levels may play role in breast cancer risk and larger patient groups may have clinical value in assessment of the genetic risk and tumor progression of breast cancer.
