Investigation of the relationship between breast cancers and HPVS

High-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) have been implicated in the ‎aetiology of a variety of human cancers, including cervical, colorectal, and head and neck (HN); ‎also, (HPVs) may be important risk factors for breast carcinogenesis and metastasis. Previous ‎studies that evaluated the prevalence of HPVs in breast cancer have generated considerable ‎controversy. Based on this hypothesis, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of HPV infection ‎in invasive breast cancer tissues. Our study included paraffinized tissue blocks taken from the pathology laboratory archive of women histologically diagnosed with breast cancer ‎in Research and Hospital- Sahinbey -Gaziantep University, and paraffinized tissue blocks of women histologically diagnosed with cervical intraepithelial lesion from the same archive. HPV was immunohistochemically detected in breast tissue samples of patients histologically diagnosed with breast cancer and identified as a patient group, and in cervical intraepithelial lesion specimens were determined as a control group. A total of 93 tissue blocks of 80 and 13 patients, respectively, were included in the study. In both specimen types, HR-HPV DNA of (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66 and 68) genotypes was investigated by PCR method using Genotypes 14 Real-TM Quant (Italy) kit. HR-HPV DNA was detected in 8 (10%) of breast cancer patients and 12 (92.3%) of control group patients. There was a statistically significant difference in HPV detection in the group with cervical intraepithelial lesion compared to breast cancer patients (p <0.05). HPV (45-56-68) were the most prevalent genotypes in breast cancer cases. ‎Although a possible causal relationship between human papillomavirus and some types of breast cancer found in our data, we think that it would be beneficial to study in larger patient groups. ‎
