Omentin levels in breast cancer pati̇ents

Purpose: Breast cancer is the most common and also the most important cause of neoplastic deaths among women wordwide. In recent years the incidance of breast cancer has increased substantially especially in industrialized countries. İncreased body mass index is a risk factor for breast cancer. The association between obesity and breast cancer is not clear. Sex steroids, growth hormone and interaction between adipocytokines are responsible mechanisms. It has been reported that in parallel to the increase in body mass index increased adiponectin and decreased leptin levels play a role in the development of breast cancer. In this study, we aimed to assess the level of omentin in breast cancer patients which has not investigated before. Methods: This study consisted of 51 breast cancer and 37 healthy women subjects Results: The median age of the breast cancer and control groups was 53 (range 28-64) and 48 (range 27-73) years, respectively (p=0.08). There were no significant differences between the breast cancer and control groups in terms of body mass index (p=0.157), total cholesterol (TC) (p=0.519), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (p=0.385), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) (p=0.597), triglycerides (TC) (p=0.989). The median plasma omentin concentration was 407 pg/mL (range 214-1055 ) in the breast cancer group and 294 pg/mL (range 75-708) in the control group (p<0.001). No significant correlation was found between omentin and the other parameters examined in the breast cancer group. Conclusion: The results of the present study suggest that omentin levels are significantly elevated in breast cancer patients.This elevation was independent of the basic risk factors such as gender, age, BMI and serum cholesterol levels. The elevation in omentin levels in breast cancer patients was due to the anti-inflammatory effects of omentin.
