The relationship between HLA-G levels and oxidative stress parameters in breast cancer patients

Abstract (EN)

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer worldwide and constitutes 32% of all cancers. Clinical studies facused on finding effective methods for early diagnosis and cure of the disease.This study aims to investigate serum HLA-G level on breast cancer patients and the correlation of oxidative stress and antioxidant parameters.25 individuals operated in School of Medicine, General Surgery Department, Gazi University, for breast cancer make patient group. 31 individuals who have no history of any kind of cancer, allergic diseases, diabetes, rheumatic and immunological disease constitute the control group. HLA-G analysis was conducted in the plasma taken from the patients and the controls. Serum GPx, SOD, MDA, AOPP, vitamin C and RSH levels were examined.Results showed that MDA, AOPP and HLA-G levels in the patient group were statistically and significantly high when compared to the control group (p<0.001). While vitamin C levels were significantly low in the patient group (p<0.05), significaut difference in GPx and GSH levels in both groups was observed (p<0.05). Serum SOD levels in the patient group were significantly low when compared to the control group (p<0.001). However,when the observed parameters of the patient and the control groups were examined, no significant correlation is observed with the patient group. In the control group, on the other hand, statistically significant positive correlations among HLA-G, MDA (r=0.580, p=0.001) and AOPP (r=0.569, p=0.01)were observed. A significant positive correlation in the control group MDA and AOPP levels (r=0.482, p=0.006) were observed,whereas no significant correlation among evaluated parameters was observed. When the patient group was evaluated for metastasis, no significant difference between the evaluated parameters of those who have lymph node metastasis and who have not was observed (p>0.05). On the other hand, no significant difference was observed when the patients who have angiolymphatic invasion and who have not were examined (p>0.05). Results of the present study indicated that there was a relationship between the oxidative stress and the deficiency of antioxidant defenses as lipit peroxidation, protein oxidation and HLA-G expression increased. The increase in HLA-G level indicated that the expected response to tumor by the patient?s immune system may have been suppressed
