Civilization and civilized human in Memet Baydur's plays

Mehmet Baydur is due to the plays that he has written between 1981 and 2001 one of the most productive and outstanding authors of Turkish theatre.The time, in which Baydur writes his plays, is the last quarter of the 20th century civilization. Turkey and the world are going through a political, economical, sociological and cultural change. Baydur is reflecting this in his plays not only from a local perspective that he directly witnesses but a universal one. The language he uses is full of irony, and his theatre in general is critical, analyzing and full of incisive humor.The first goal of this thesis is to analyze the general character of Memet Baydur?s plays, and to focus on the notion of civilization and civilized people. The answer to the questions of ?what is a civilization? and ?who is civilized? is searched for. Together with the study of all of his plays, essays and stories, the notion of civilization and civilized people is discussed in detail in Baydur?s plays Yalnızlığın Oyuncakları, Tensing, Kutu Kutu and Lozan.There, in the end of this thesis it becomes clear that Memet Baydur?s plays are focusing on the concept of civilization and civilized human with a questioning and critic point of view. Under this aspect, he exposes his sensitiveness and responsibility of an intellectual.Key words: Memet Baydur, theatre, civilization, civilized human
