The functions of stories in Memet Baydur

Memet Baydur is one of famous playwrights who has got his fame in Turkey in1981 by his first play ?Lemon? and has strengthened this fame by his products. Baydur has started playwriting in a period of time which the organised government pressure had been applied so effectively. This time was a bored and silent period which belonged to a degenerated arabesque (thoroughly confused) life.The characters of Baydur?s characters are the witnesses of this confused period. These characters appear to readers and watchers by abstracting themselves from the concrete situations of 1980?s and 90? s Turkey or by being a means of narration of this government pressure. And they support their tellings on this preiod by narration.The retold events has happenned somewhere in the past but the narration act is now and here.but not all the telling about the past is a narration. In order to make a narration , the people told about and the others must take place in a certain time and place. The narration must be related to any change of this time and place.Memet Baydur has created many narrations while making his characters the witnesses of the period. These narrations has made the detailed presentation of the events possible. It has also provided to lighten the pasts of the people and to solve many of technical problems. At the same time , these narrations which has been studied on has provided to produce both subjective meanings to stories and objective aspects of view. It has also beautified the plays in esthetical aspects and presented the flow of the events perfectly.In this study, the narrations in Memet Baydur?s plays have fulfilled technical functions, esthetical functions and idealogical fuctions and these narrations have been studied under these titles.
