Abstract (EN)
-93- SUMMARY Periodontal disease and osteoporosis are public health problems that affect millions of people. After menopause there is an acceleration in bone loss which leads to osteoporosis and this can be reduced by estrogen therapy. Interleukin ip is a pro-inflamatuar cytokine which is the most potent known bone resorbing mediator, stimulating osteoclast differentiation and activation. Alkaline phosphatase enzyme is a powerfull biochemical marker of periodontal disease activity. It has been well esthablished that bone loss is influenced by both systemic and local factors, but the relationship of osteoporosis to oral bone loss and periodontal disease has -been addressed in a limited number of study. The purpose of this two year longitudinal study was to compare the effects of estrogen changes on periodontal tissues by clinical methods by Pll, Gl, BOP, PD and AL and IL-1p, ALP gingival crevicular fluid levels in base line and one year after periodontal therapy 73 postmenopausal women were divided into two groups, as estrogen deficient (O") and estrogen sufficient (0+) and after the clinical measurements, the two group were divided into two subgroups as gingivitis and periodontitis. Clinical indices and GCF 1L-1P and ALP levels were higher in periodontitis patients than gingivitis patients in both groups. The frequency of GCF IL-ip and ALP was higher in O" periodontitis group than 0+ periodontits group. This shows that estrogen can have effects on periodontal tissues and low estrogen enviroment allows increased local production of the bone-active cytokine IL-10 and ALP enzyme.
