The examination of the attitudes of the vocational and technical high school students' towards the biology course and academic achievement (Bingöl province sample)

The aim of this thesis is to examine the attitudes of the students in vocational and technical high schools towards the Biology course in terms of gender, school type and department variables and to examine the attitude towards the Biology course and academic achievement. In order to determine the attitudes of vocational high school students towards Biology course, "Attitude Scale towards Biology Course" which was developed by Koçakoğlu and Türkmen (2010) was utilized. The 3-article demographic information which includes; school name, gender and departmental information are given on the scale. That scale is used for all vocational and technical high schools of Bingöl district. It was applied to 553 students which studying in 10th grade. The results were evaluated in the SPSS 24 program. Descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis H test and Spearman technic were used to investigate the sub-problem sentences. With the statistical studies, the relationship between the students' attitudes towards the Biology course and their sub-dimensions was found between 1-5 scales (to be close to 5). The attitude scores of the laboratory were the highest and the attitude scores related to the biology were the lowest. Also, in the examinations carried out in other sub-problems, female students' attitude towards Biology course was higher than that of male students. Besides, in the examinations made according to the department, it was determined that the scores of the students in the Department of Health Services were significantly lower than those of the other department students. According to school examinations, attitudes towards biology course scores of the vocational high school students, attitude towards the laboratory and attitude scores related to the group studies have not emerged a statistically significant difference according to the department, however other sub-dimension scores display some statistically significant differences. It is concluded that, there have no significant relationship between students' attitudes towards biology and academic achievement.
